Vic Mensa Will Be 2014′s Breakout Hip-Hop Star

The clock had just rounded one in the morning and the party was still going strong at an apartment on the campus of the University of Illinois. I had traveled south from Chicago to catch Chance The Rapper, arguably hip-hop’s breakout star of 2013, open his Social Experiment Tour. I noticed the Chicago emcee Vic Mensa leaning against a counter next to me, idly checking his phone. Looking around, I saw many at the party gawking at the 20-year-old rapper and quickly whispering to friends, as others aimed cell phones his way. Walking over, I asked Mensa, who an hour earlier had sent the crowd of college students into a frenzy with a guest verse on Chance’s “Cocoa Butter Kisses,” what it was like to be the most popular person at a party that no one seemed to talk to. Chance The Rapper opened his debut headlining Social Experiment tour two and a half hours south of his hometown of Chicago on Friday October 25. Photographer/videographer Bryan Lamb and myself made the trip and were on hand for all the festivities as Chance and crew kicked things off at the University of Illinois. A majority of Save Money made the trip south,  joining Chano onstage was none other than Vic Mensa who himself is currently between tours with J. Cole and Disclosure. [Album] Stix Jam Pack

Greg Landfair, aka Stix, former Kids These Days drummer and current backing for Chance The Rapper, released his drum pack for producers today via Hiphopdrumsamples.com. The pack features over a hundred sounds garnered from a number of sessions with artists including Jeff Tweedy, Beastie Boys producer Mario C at the Sonic Ranch in El Paso, Texas. The sounds are almost directly out of his work with Kids These Days and include a variety of sounds including elevator snares, snares in the shower, live claps, gongs and full drum loops, among others.
